Bennies Root Canal
Observation Details
Saturday March 4, 2023. Consistent light to medium snowfall in the morning followed by clouds in the afternoon. Our group dug a snowpit at roughly 3385' on Bennies Root Canal, right branch, climber's right side. We observed 143cm of snow, with multiple ice crust layers within the snowpack:
143cm of snow
2cm ice crust at a depth of 21cm [CT13]
2cm ice crust at a depth of 36cm
6cm ice crust at depth of 48--53cm
10cm of sugary, faceted snow below said ice layer
Ice crusts and pockets of facets to the ground [CT30]
Snowpit results:
CT13, Q3 resistant planar failure at a depth of 23cm
CT30, Q3 resistant planar failure at a depth of 60cm on facets
ECTX - no propagation
We filled in our pit and skied from this location. Great soft turns on the ski down.
