Trip to investigate recent avalanche
Angel Slides; Irene path
Observation Details
Went to assess the size and scope of previous avalanche two days earlier. There were no signs of additional avalanches since. The crown of the previous avalanche averaged 2' in depth with a maximum of 3' and was approximately 170 feet wide (full path). The majority of snow traveled approximately 600' coming to rest on a bench (burial spots) with more runout traveling down and right for a total distance of about 1,000'. Mostly Sunny, Temp: 0 deg f, wind SE 0-10mph. Recent fluctuations in temperature, along with wind made a breakable boot top crust over softer snow for the entire descent to Marcy Dam. Skiing was tricky but not unenjoyable. Inconsistent results from several stability tests, as well as minor whumpfing when we started to descend showed there was a potential for human trigged avalanches in select wind slab and lee deposition zones.
